sealant options?

I'm looking for a sealant that is clear and matte. I basically want to coat clay sculptures to make them water safe but don't want them glossy and unnatural looking. Any suggestions?

Is it possible to use an epoxy and then lightly sand to remove the sheen?

Interesting idea! I wouldn't have thought of that. I wonder if they could make custom ones at a good price.

Will the shine matter if it's underwater?

I'm trying to avoid that. I want to be able to do it myself and I've never liked the glaze they use at places like that... Also the material I'm building with doesn't need firing.
Not sure how much the gloss will matter underwater but I'm just trying to avoid it if possible.
