I just picked up a standard 150 gallon from a guy off craigslist for free. Very thick glass maybe 3/8 or 1/2 inch and it has no upper or lower center transoms. He told me there was a slow drip. The center eventually bowed out to reveal a bit more than a slow drip in which case he drained and made an attempt to seal by running a bead of sealant. Now I have the tank and there is about a 1/4 inch gap where the bottom and rear of the tank meet running about 16 inches from the center because he removed all the sealant and tried to run a massive bead but it failed. What is the best way to go about drawing the rear panel of glass flush to the bottom panel so that I can seal it. Also do you think it is in my best interest to install lower transoms so that the pressure doesn't draw the panels apart again? I was thinking I could use ratchet straps like I use for tie downs on ATVs and motorcycles and I also I have large bar clamps I use for carpentry work but I just think these methods may be a little too forceful for working with glass. While Im at it should I install upper transoms as well? Will I need to redo all the trim again? My standard 125 gallon has center transoms at every third interval and I just dont feel comfortable having a tank more than 75 gallons with such a minimal amount of outward support.
I just want this tank to fit my standards so that I can trust having it in my home or trust that if I sell it I wont be sending a bad product into someone else's home.
Thanks everyone, the sooner I can get this tank off spare tires and out of my backyard the sooner I can enjoy having yet another 100+ gallon aquarium.
