there is a tank in my backyard just sitting there and it has a huge crack and from top to bottom i was wondering can i seal it and it would still be reliable to hold water. i dont want to come home and a have about 70 gallons of water on the floor. it holds water by itself w/o any sealant. what should i use to seal it and how should i seal it

nope... not worth the risk...

best thing to do is to replace the piece either with glass or even plywood (do some searching in the diy sections theres some really good threads about this)

dont get me wrong.. you can just put some silicone on it and call it a day.. but when/if it gives out... i want you to get "i toldja" tattooed on left foot..

I wouldn't trust it either. just look in the local phone book and see if there are any glass shops by you. take your measurements and ask how much for a replacement piece of glass is. you'll be surprised because glass is pretty cheap. they get some aquarium sealant and your half way there. you can have it done over a weekend..

Replace it. You don't want to risk 70 gallons of water to a broken piece of glass.

Use it as a sump? I wouldn't risk having a cracked tank full of water in my house.

NFG...gotta change the piece of glass. A cracked piece will break under pressure. Just a matter of time.

Does a sump not have water in it:screwy:

Not to hijack but I too have a cracked tank (40 gallon long). I was thinking about putting a piece of acrylic over the crack with silicone and using it as a sump. How high do you think the risk is of it cracking through? I will have about 20 gallons of water in it at all times (I suspect).
