For about 4 years I mixed a few seashells into the substrate of my CA/SA tanks just for looks and to give them something to carry around or whatnot. However a few weeks ago someone told me that I should never put seashells in as they could be bad for fish. My experience over the past 4 years differs. Is there something I'm missing here is there any truth to it? The person telling me this specialises in keeping discus (blah) so I can see how an extreme softwater species may object.

Sometimes I think discus people think that anything other than water in tank is bad for the fish lol. Even then, I question how they feel about water since they do 400% changes daily lol.

Anyways, I've had hermit crab shells in one my tanks for a long time. I've never experienced anything crazy.

Maybe they were confused with crushed coral? Crushed coral alters ph. I think it's crushed coral.

I gathered the majority of my substrate from the beaches in Northwest california, shells and all. I've also used beach driftwood that was only lightly rinsed with zero problems. Just saying
