Picked up a 150G a few days ago.

Current tank is a 75G with a 8" Oscar, 4" Oscar, and 5" JD and a 4" Tiger Plec. See here:

I plan on adding all the above fish to the 150G along with a Firemouth and possibly an unruly Salvini. He's one mean bastid!

The 75G has two Aquaclear 110 HOB's.

The 150G tank was cleaned, set up and filled to 75% capacity 72 hours ago. I used Prime to dechlor. Today I added 1/3 of the gravel to the 150G from the cycled 75G (which was around 3" deep in the 75G), one 1 foot x 1 foot piece of driftwood, and about 20 gallons of cycled tank water. (I know there are dif thoughts whether any substantial amount of BB is in the water, but what the heck).

I also took one of the AC 110's off the 75G and put it on the 150G.

About 6 hours ago I added 1/2 dozen 4" Giant Danios to the 150G for an ammonia source. These were in another tank of mine. I also added about 10 TBLS of salt to the tank.

I plan on monitoring the 150G and 75G for ammonia. nitrite, and nitrate daily. My plan is to take one Cichlid out of the 75G and adding it to the 150G every 72 hours or so should my parameters cooperate. I will also add more substrate from the 75G every few days or so, eventually adding all of it plus my large piece of driftwood, fake plants, rocks/caves, and finally the remaining AC 110 and last Cichlid. If everything goes to plan, the last Cichlid (Big Oscar) should be in the 150G within 2-3 weeks.

Now, does anyone see any holes or faults in my rationale? I would most likely only do 10% WC weekly in the 150G unless I see a good ammo/nitrite spike. I would somewhat surprised should this happen, however.

Also, I plan on getting a Rena XP4 to go along with the 110's in a month or so. I may eventually end up getting 2 XP4's and just replacing the 110's, but that's for another day...

Any thoughts or suggestions?

^^ i agree. that's how i switched tanks. moved from a 55 to a 75 with the same bio load. placed my HOB filter on the new tank, started my wet/dry, been running both for about 5 weeks now. getting ready to take the HOB off soon.

I think you're making it more complicated than you need to.

1. Move filters.
2. Move stuff.
3. Move fish.
4. Have a beer.

You're increasing the bioload in the new tank a little with the addition of more fish, but I think your biofilter will catch up without impacting water parameters too much. Just keep a close eye on the water in the new tank and you should be fine.

Normally I'm known to be very impatient. Maybe my pendulum has swung the other way? ;)

They are going to another location where I won't be residing at for another couple weeks, so maybe I wanted to take is slower.

Thanks for the suggestions... I'll uncomplicate myself and move everything over today. :D

Well said Bob!!

if you simply move the fish over, filters over, substrate with all new water you are fine.

the filters that were on the 75 will easily handle the load in twice as much water in new tank.

you should not see any ammnonia or nitrite at all.

the 150 will not begin to cycle with your established filters from the 75g on it.

especially given that it is twice the dilution volume.

good luck and post pics of the new monster tank! :)

For some reason my Oscars seem to have shrunk?!? ;)

The Lutino is a bit shy, he's over in the cave on the far left. There's a Dempsey and a FM in there too somewhere. I may put the Salvini in there sooon, but if I need to take her out it's going to be tough catching her in that thing.

Still some work to do, but so far all is good.
