I'm considering adding this species to my 60 gal SA community tank. Currently the inhabitants are a male Apistogramma, Oto cats, and various small tetras and pencilfish.

From what I've learned, they shouldn't cause any problems for the knifefish, and the knifefish shouldn't view them as food.

My main questions are:

Do they like being in groups or is there intraspecific aggression?

For decor, do they like leaves/wood/plants or do they just need open sand?

Since they spend most of their time on the bottom, should there be no other bottom dwellers? Or can I add more dwarf cichlids and some corydoras?

Any additional information is appreciated

That sounds like a great tank. What species of pencilfish do you have? I am assuming one of the dwarfs.

I haven't seen these in about a year. As I recall they are slightly more active than ossas. They hide and sit on the bottom most of the day. So be prepared for that. I would probably avoid dwarf cichlids, because I think they may pick at them a little. I don't see an issue with Corys though. If you do go with a group buy them as soon as you see them. I don't think they are extremely rare but, they don't come in often.

I think you are going to want some open sand to watch them sift through it. Here is an awesome video from rare aquatics. It kind of makes me want them now.

These look like the sort that need small and frequent feedings to keep sustained

I have marginatus dwarf pencilfish. Very cute fish

I only have the 1 apisto, and he’s pretty docile so I’ll leave him but watch out for any aggression.

Would Pygmy corydoras be safe, given their extremely small size? I’m assuming yes but I just want to be backed up by others

The tank pic is from when the fish were in a 30 and it’s essentially the same in the 60, just with more open space and sand. Should I add more wood and plants?

Nice addition. Knives will stay on their side but is it stressed?

Not completely sure. It was breathing fast when it was first introduced yesterday, but now the breathing is normal.

I tried feeding frozen blood worms last night after lights went out, but it didn't eat :/
I'll try again tonight.
