I was picking up a silver aro yesterday, and the guy also had a cheap eye biter. I had no interest in it, but I knew my friend who is big into African set ups would. We took a rough measurement and the fish is about 9.5" long. Just seeking some general info of your experience. I know they have a somewhat bad rep, but also heard some stories of them being quite peaceful. I also saw that around our area, a 6" fish was selling for $30. Any idea of what one at 9-10" is worth? THanks

Africans are all about what you are willing to pay. As far as eye biters, they were the most timid of all the larger haps that I had.

Mine, which was a female, was very peaceful. Except it did try to prey/eat smaller fish in the tank that could fit in it's mouth (which is what they naturally do in the wild), which is why I had to sell it.

Thanks for the info guys. I had no interest in it, and traded the fish to my friend for a geo. Just making sure it was a fair deal, as neither one of us really know much about the fish, other than I didn't want it, and he did. Which I guess makes it fair for each.

Seems like a fair trade to me.

Here is my male, around eight inches long. Very nice coloring, the pics do no justice.

A compressiceps that big is a monster.... at least a 3-4 years old. I would guess fair trading price would be $50-$75 through clubs or around $75-$100 at a fish store.

They're sort of like an A-10 Warthog.... a fish built around a mouth. When compared to their body size, they have one of the largest mouths of all Rift Lake cichlids.

Oh yeah, and I've never heard of them actually biting the eyes of other fish.
