it seems like my aro loves to hurt himself and i am not sure how to prevent it.. in order to keep the fish in the tank i utilize egg-crate. to those unfamiliar with what this is - it's basically a plastic grid with 1/4" square holes that is on top of the tank. the aro naturally jumps, and hits this with his face. he's had a few scratches in the past but his most recent injury has left him with a 1/8" gash along the top of his nose area with a small flap of skin, if you will. it's not bleeding or anything and i know it will eventually heal but what do you all do to prevent injuries and keep him safe inside the tank?

What are the dimensions of the tank? What species is this aro?

lower water level , try floating plants

do have floating plants but don't enjoy seeing the water-line in the tank.. i may try to construct a mount for the egg crate which will elevate it higher above the surface of the water. right now it's only 1-2"

6' x 2' foot print and 2.5' tall and it is a silver aro. ~12" long, great fins and healthy - eats and swims as expected

i currently have taken the lid and light off and built a little fly room for my silver
i have lost 2 other small silvers from jumping into the lid not gonna happen this time and it seams like he likes to jump even moor with it like this
but now since i found this silver i think I'm gonna have to plan on getting a bigger tank!

Is there any reason you are using an eggcrate as a cover? If not, why not switch to glass lids? The silver might still get a bump here or there, but will probably cut down on the scratches.

That's a pretty neat cover you built there. Never seen anything like it. Very cool!

If the water parameters are ok, then i see no reason why your aro is so jumpy. How long did you have him?
