For you and your family! I've seen them before in those "eco friendly" houses, small ponds stocked w/ edible fish that you literally just go fishing for. Some right in the living room. What would be the best way to do this? I have a feeling tilapia will be my choice when I do get this going, too bad snakeheads are illegal, so tasty haha. Or are there any other tasty easy to breed aquatic animals?

The setup I saw was 500 gallons, had a TON of plants and such and a hydroponics area w/ veggies growing out of it. Also what would be the best way to get it going to make sure the fish have no cunwanted chems or in purities? I love the idea of a self renewing food source, chickens are too loud and smelly, I feel bad shooting wild rabbit so breeding those is out of the question, etc. Especially w/ my fish obsession I figure this is my best bet.

Thanks for any input guys! Hopefully we can make this a good one so more people start eating renewable food sources.

There were several threads like this in the lounge over the years if you want faster results

Hmm wonder what a good keyword would be then, when i searched i only came up with renewable sources for fish not people haha

I think there are several on here that run aquaponics. I do in the summer time in my pond with some hanging gardens, but I don't eat the fish...considering how carp taste I don't think koi would taste all that good. lol

In the winter time there aren't alot of plants that stay alive, though apparently that's due to the selection. I'm no expert in this but based on my in ground plant survival rate compared with the hanging gardens, I'd guess I was using the wrong type in the aquaponics system for year-round growth in AZ.

At any rate supposedly if you do your job well enough you can forgo any water changes and simply do top offs to take care of evap. I don't think I have enough plants to do that right now so I also use the pond to water the in ground garden and then top off.

I saw something like this on that show "DOOMSDAY PREPOERS". They had a aquaponics system with tilapia so when the zombies come they can eat them.
