I have a couple very nice fish that I paid decent money for but I'm changing my stock and there just not going to work in my new tank. I'd like to get rid of them but I don't want to just give them away. Anybody ever sold a nice uncommon fish to an LFS for a decent price?

Depends on the store/mood of the owner. 1/3 retail price would be the maximum you could get, unless the fish is worth (retail) over maybe $20 to $25. After that, you might be looking more towards 1/2 retail max. Depends on the store's policy as far as margin per cost goes. As the price goes up, margin usually goes down.

Most retailers can get, say, a 3" comet for ~70 cents, and they will turn around and sell that fish for $3 to $4. However, to stay competitive and move more of the expensive stuff (over $20), they reduce the margin to ~100% instead of ~300%.

Your best bet is to find a hobbyist near you willing to buy. The reason you won't necessarily get those same prices at a store is because they don't know what your tanks are like, there is just too much ambiguity for them to deal with, so they may refuse to buy or offer very little.

I have a 7-8 inch male nicaraguan cichlid, I paid $30 for him but he's the only nic I've seen down here in Maine. I'd take $20 for him I just don't want to give away 30 dollar fish. I also have a couple jewel cichlids along with some other weird fish but they were relatively cheap. I'd give them away hahah and yes I know 30 dollars isn't much compared to some high end aros and rays but I could get another cool hap for that

Post them here on MFK for say $30 all to a good home. There are MFKers up in Maine...even some who would be willing to drive to get them.
Another option is a local aquarium or school...I'm sure an Oceanic school or institution would take them....at make a call. The only thing is they would be looking for the fish as donations so no $$....
The local free want ads can work as well as Craigslist...just have themmeet you somewhere...don't invite strangers to the house.

In Milwaukee, Nics are almost as common as guppies.
I had a blow out sale because of my move with half dozen adults up for sale (proven pair among them), went for $5 each, and had 2" fry 2 for $1, with quantity discounts, buy 10, get 2 or more, free.
Its all about supply and demand

Here in Milwaukee, lfs will only give you 1/4 of what they sell it for. So you'll get $7.50 if it's in very nice shape. You're better off selling on here or Craigslist. As Duanes said if it's too common they probably won't give you anything. I had a batch of female sunshine peacock cichlids and they offered me nothing so I ended up taking them back home.

I got 35 bucks for a 13 inch flagtail red tailed prochilodus the LFS sold him for 125 bucks a few days later to someone.
