Cleveland, Oh.
I have a couple of small Green Sunfish that I'm interested in selling, and I have two questions:

1: Is it legal to sell them in, and ship them out of Ohio?

2: What states would it be illegal to ship them to?

If it matters, they are not wild caught, and I did not pay for them.

If you live in Cleveland the answer to both above is no due to VHS bans

2: What states would it be illegal to ship them to?

Illegal to all states again due to VHS ban

If it matters, they are not wild caught, and I did not pay for them.

Even if not wild caught....You'll usually be required to have permits to sell the fish.

Just out of curiosity, if not wild caught and not purchased, how did you obtain the fishes?

The laws regarding fish sales can be rather complicated. If you intend to sell native fish (either wild or captive) I would suggest you contact your state DNR. Usually a nice group of people but you must make sure to get the attention of the right person. Phone calls will often lead to a run around but writing will yield good results in most cases.

I'm not speaking specifically to the Ohio DNR. I'm generalizing since I don't live in Ohio.

If you do not have a bill of sale or a letter from the land owner whose pond you took them from, and do not have an Ohio aquaculture license, then yes they are in fact illegal to sell. Trust me on this please.

I got mine the same way. My manager didn't think the store could sell them, so he gave them to me for free. I thought it might be okay to sell them since they're technically farm-raised in Florida.

Guess I'll have to find someone locally with a pond, and pass them on.

Offer them up for free, plus shipping. Someone may reciprocate with another offer of a fish you might like. As long as no "trade" or monetary exchange happens, you are legal.
