you mean external gills? all juvy bichirs and ropefish have external gills that go away as they grow. They just go away at a different rate depending on species and individuals, all other factors being equal.

I agree. I used to see them on some of the tiny baby sens that would come in when I worked at PetSmart. In fact the one that I rescued, at barely an inch long, had them, he came in missing half of both pectoral fins and is now very fat and happy. He had is external gills for maybe a couple of days because he grew so fast. I don't think the external gills of sens are as pronounced as some other polies, but they are there when they are young. I think part of why you may not have seen them is that baby sens are so tiny and its really hard to spot the external gills just because of this fact.
