So, I looked at my bichir the other day and saw that his fins had some white stuff on the ends, and it looked like the fins were receding, leaving the spines behind. I thought that he was getting sick. So, I took out the carbon, started him up on Melafix, and no sooner did I do that (and he settled back down) then lo & behold, I see my Botia dart over and latch onto his tail fin! What an A-hole! He did this about 4-5 times before I decided to catch him and toss him in the 5.5 with the crayfish. As soon as I got this done, I put an ad up on craigslist.com and within 48 hours, someone came and picked up the both of the.

So... notes for learning:
1. Botias will pick on bichirs that are 2-3 times their size.
2. Botias will also strip plants bare (found that one out a couple days earlier... grrr!)
3. Botias will get along with crayfish in close quarters... for a little while... lol

1. Botias pick on any Fish, regardles of Size, if that fish is slower (which most fish are)

2. If a predator catches a botia and swallows it whole, the thorns of the botia can rip holes into the predators digestive organs ---> not very healthy.

3. You can keep botia together with piris, with no problem. They will just shredd them.

Good luck for Your bichir

Wow... had no idea botias were so intense... thanks for the info, though. Too bad. It was a really interesting fish!

i too have a yoyo loach. I used him to clear out some snails in my 29 gallon. then he started tearing the fins of my goldfish. so i moved him to my big tank where he seems to leave everyone alone. once in awhile he'll chase around my bichir and clown loaches but no tearing. hmmm...everything seems to be outgrowing all my loaches so i might just trade them in. Dont want any torn insides coming out of my young monstters...:swear:

ive never heard nor had an agressive yoyo, but heard of some sp. of botia being agressive. i dont think it should have been in with a goldfish anyway...

I have a Botia like pictured above and he is pretty aggressive. He is in my community tropical tank and thankfully stays on the bottom most of the time and the other fish swim around up top. But I have a yo-yo and a queen Botia that are both relatively friendly. Just depends I guess.

Yeah I have never heard of a mean yoyo loach either.
