Hello guys can anyone please help me if my senegal bichir attitude is normal I have a 55g he's still 4-5 inches and will upgrade soon but I did 20% water change this morning and placed a small housing for him. After placing his housing he always stays there barely swimming, but before without a house he was so active. Swimming around and gulping for air and jumping outside the water. Thank you guys it's my first ever fish and tank :)

Welcome aboard

Yes normal for a young Senegal but as it gets adjusted should become more active from my experience with the species.

Welcome! A small - mid sized american cichlid would make a great tankmate.Yes,young sens do that. When he gets used to his new tank,as tlindsey tlindsey said they do breathe air ,so don't fill your tank up to the brim.Don't get any plecos though ,they get drawn to the taste of the bichir's slime coat,i didn't know any better and put a delhezi bichir with my bristlenose and walked in on my bristlenose chasing my delhezi and sucking on his slimecoat.
