Do senegal bichirs (polypterus senegalus) like to live in groups? I had two that always swam around together and slept by eachother, then one jumped out of the tank a few days ago and died, and now the remaining one just kinda wanders around the tank or lies in corner. Does he miss the other one? Should I buy him another buddy? Or do they end up getting territorial and wanting to be alone as they age? The bichirs are/were about 3-4". Thanks!

well maybe depending on what tank mates you have with them? The feeling that they need to stick together but i have my bichirs they like to fight over food so they dont get along when it comes to food but after they do lie with each other

As people might object on my answer, Sen bichirs and the rest of the specis love to be in small groups. As long as you have a reasonablelly large tank, it's all good. With a 55 gal, you can maybe keep 2 or 3 senegals or albinos for a long period of time or for life. i had two 4 inch albinos and one 4 inch sen in a 30 gal tank and they were all buddies. Just don't feed ur bichirs feeder fish because that can trigger natural hunting aggresion. To keep large specis of bichirs (ornate, endlis, dels), all you need is a large tank, a good feeding and plenty of hiding place for them to cooperate. Remember that bichirs have different personnalities.
Good luck.

id say get him a buddy, i have 2 ive raised from babies that love to be together

I have two ornates, and its like they are in love or something. They always rest together in the same cave, and are often seen together. one likes to get out in the open more, while the other stays in the shadows.
