I have a 7 " Senegal bichir who in the past two weeks has developed a strange swimming stroke. The best I can desribe it is his right side dips then his left quickly though. He wobbles left right left right very quickly without much forward movement. If he uses just his front fins for locomotion he seems to be fine but when he tries to get his body involved he spases into the left right wobble. He is eating fine just can't move very well. I saw the dats take a shot at him so I thought they could have possibly broken his back? He is moved now to a safe place. I will try to think of a better way to explain his movements. Thanks all..

but only if it uses its body for propulsion?

I don't know it is strange sometimes I see him and he is fine... This is when I am assuming he is only using his front fins/flippers for lack of a better word to move.. But when he tries to boogie or move a little faster.. It is kinda like if you hold your hand straight out palm down and you just rock it pinky side down then thumb side down in a rocking back and forth motion. This is how he moves rocking back and forth without barely moving forward. Maybe I will have to capture him on video doing it.

wats a bichir?

a bichir looks somewhat like an eel, commonly incorrectly named "dinosaur eel" or something along those lines at my LFS.. they have long bodies, row of large spines on their backs, breathe air, and are awesome.

no bichirs are freshwater and shouldn't be kept in brackish. and yes dats as in datnoids. i don't think all datnoids are brackish so they can be kept in fresh, but i really don't know much about them so i'll just leave it at that.
