Hello,

I'm having currently some small sized bichirs in my planted tank. Considering of adding some altum angels in there. Will their fins get nipped by the polys? Or will the polys get attacked by the altums?

Thanks!

they may nip the fins, but I am not totally sure. They can be quite the predator when the lights go out.

i think there is a picture of somebody's tank on here where they have angels and poly's, and it doesn't look like there is any fin nipping or anything.

Polypterus don't really nip fins in my experience, they either eat the fish or they leave it alone. Angels probably wouldn't get eaten, so i'd say you are fine with them.

A larger concern in mixing these african species with altums is pH preferences. While polys can tolerate neutral pH, they don't thrive in non-alkaline conditions. They come from hard alkaline waters with a pH in the 7.5 and up ranges. Altum angels come from soft slightly acid waters with a pH of around 6.7.

although i agree with oddball about the PH, most fish are very adaptable and acceptable of a decent PH difference. I know there are pikes that really like soft acidic water, but they can still be kept in slightly alkaline water just fine.

There are a few videos I've seen of angels with polys, they seemed to be fine. Everyone I've talked to has said as long as the angel is a good size it should be fine.
However, a month ago I was going to buy a 4" marbled angel from a private dealer who put the angel in with a 3" delhezi, who apparantly clamped on to the angel and wouldn't leave it alone... so I bought the del. I think once again it comes down to your fish's appetite and aggression.
I really wanted angels and if he had ordered a bigger angel this could not have physically happened. If you get one grow it out or get a big one, they're both great fish.

After all of ur valuable advices, looks like its safe to go ahead with the mix. Thank u guys so much!

I'm currently keeping altums with endlicheri 2 and in the past delhezi senegal and ornate were present in the tank never had one problem with the mix

i have keap my 25cm palmas whit 2 couples of angels for more than a year
and whit only 1 trouble the angels get crazy about gambusias fish and hunt better than the bichirs :D
