At an LFS today, they had some bichirs about 4 inches labeled as Senegals. They looked a tad different to me though. They had speckles on top of their body/head. I know Senegals can have small speckles, but these speckles seemed to be bigger- it just looked like a different pattern than what I have seen on Senegals. I know this thread would be a lot better with pics.

Is there any species that looks this similar to Senegals? The coloring in the fins and the color of the body was the same as Senegals- just those larger speckles on top.

Not really senegals are basicly the only species with no pattern.-Anne

what was the price?

I believe it was $19. This place way overcharges for Ornates, so I'll bet if it is indeed something other than a Senegal, and they knew it was something else, they would be charging much more.

where did you see those?

At Premier in the same tank I got my Indo from. Don't get excited though. I could have just been seeing things. They are probably just Senegals that look a little different from the ones I have. I don't want you to make a trip all the way down their just to see that they are Sens. Maybe I can stop by again soon, and stare harder at them, and maybe even snap a pic.

Nah, I'm just curious. Maybe if I get off early tomorrow, I go to some LFS.

BTW, if you ever see a flagtail, LMK.

I went there again today to see if they had blackworms. I looked at the bichirs again. They have a row of small spots/speckles on each side of the dorsal, and 4 slightly larger spots on top of the head. The spots/speckles aren't far in color from the rest of the body. They look very much like Senegals. Is this just a normal attribute of smaller Senegals, and when they get bigger, they lose the speckles:confused:

Paul, I will keep an eye out for a Flagtail for ya.
