I had a rare moment tonight sat by myself in front of my tank. Our resident razorback must turtle was right at the front of the glass so I decided to show the tip of my finger to it and let it chase it back and forth along the tank. I was suddenly surprised when my senegalus decided to then follow and chase my finger-it could clearly see and followed it back and forth and up and down for some time

Though I admit to rarely having time to sit and relax and watch my fish (3 boys see to that!) I've never seen this in a polypterus before. I always assumed their eyesight was poor and they relied on smell when hunting.

I just wondered if anyone else had ever experienced this with their own Polys?

All the time. I have never been a believer that they have poor eyesight despite the general consensus . Yes their smell senses are amazing but they CAN see. As a matter of fact, I have noticed as I move from one end to the other end of the tank...some of their eyes will follow me...... I do believe though some species have better developed eyes than others.....

My lap does the same thing lol. She will even come up to the front for a picture if i hold my phone up. Its crazy

My one eye endlicheri finds food significantly faster than my other with two's eyes. But, two eye one is a lot for skittish/shy and goes insane running into the glass and objects like 60% of the times it would see me.
Previously had a Senegal for a while, was quite playful and would follow around the room

Bichir infact can see. They are far sighted. They can see from far away but once the object is infront of the tip of the snout they now use more on smell as they can no longer see whats infront of them. It varies from different species/variants.

Amazing-my first ever fish I kept back in 1986 was a P. polli (saw it whilst being in an aquarium shop with my school friend) and was hooked. I never recalled it or any other Polys I've kept since doing this.
I'll have to make time to do this more often
