Dear MFK, Ive got about 30 marbled crays from 1-1.5 that I bred and grew out specifically to feed to my p. senegalus. Now that they are feeding size Ive begun TRYING to feed them to the bichir. The problem is that the bichir is kept with smaller cichlids, so I have to point feed (by hand ) or the cichlids get almost all of the food. I have been doing this for months and the bichir is now around 6. My problem is that the bichir doesnt seem interested in the crayfish at all. She used to eat them if I put them in after the cichlids were asleep, but lately she doesnt seem interested and I suspect that the cichlids get them in the morning. She will still take all of her usual foods with vigor (jumbo krill, beefheart, shrimp pellets, she also gets the and the NLS that the cichlids miss).
I will be moving the bichir into a 75 with some juvie green terrors and would like to slow/stop the hand feeding soon and start using foods that the cichlids wont be able to eat (whole crayfish, live ghost shrimp/earthworms/market shrimp). Has anyone else ever had trouble getting their bichirs to take crayfish?
