will seng bichirs breed with other fish in the tank or will i need to set up a special breeding tank?

Breeding polypterus in an aquarium is rare, but has been done. It's difficult to answer when so few have had success. There's a video on youtube of a pair of ornates breeding. I can't remember offhand if there were other fish in the tank, but I remember the tank looked small.

beblondie just posted "you'll need at least a second tank P.senegals tend to show no parental care in fact they
will eat the eggs.-Anne" on my breeding thread ill try to find that youtube vid. thank you

It is much easier to move adults than to catch out all the eggs. I use a 4x2x2 tank for spawning and then hatching with egg crate 3cm off the bottom to reduce egg predation. I use a sterilised clean bare bottom tank with gentle airstone and no filtration used since the fish arent there long and are not fed. Spawning occurs over 2-3 days over acrylic mops. I do add a UV filter to slow down fungus on eggs and occasionally add a heater to bump up temp for faster hatch time.

You will need to size sort the fry to reduce canabalism as they grow.

well i know that my bichirs are to young as of now but when the time comes i wanted to know if i could breed. thanks for the info.

A buddy of mine had his senegals lay eggs in a tank with some Needlefish. Sadly eggs never hatched and they never laid again. The tank was nothing special and he didnt even try to breed the senegals in the first place.

my old senegals bred in a tank with tons of fish in there.
however, they ate up all the eggs and laid again.
then ate them again.
i was too lazy to take them out because it was in the morning before school.
