Hi all, I have recently acquired a Jag pair, male would be 13-14" & Female about 9". I have had them in a 180 for a week now & they have barely left each other alone the whole time, the problem is i wanted a wet pet, not a breeding pair & she eats like a horse & he barely gets a nibble so I separated them yesterday & both fish seem to be in mourning, especially the big fella as he just gives me stink eye. This has left me with a heavy heart as well now lol & has left me wondering if i should have done this at all. I realize they will both get over it but how long could this take & more importantly, if separated for to long will he accept her back at all. Thanks for any help..

So what do you want to do? If you just want fish then rehome one of them. If you're worried about him rejecting her down the road but you still want both of them then remove the divider.

I don't know what I want to do yet, I don't have a divider so she's in a 120 that I will eventually want for something else but im not sure how long I can keep them separated before he decides that he wants nothing to do with her.

male jags are horn dogs. you will need to keep them separated except for spawning, about week after spawning they will need to be separated with a divider again, my pair are together right now, they spawned almost a week ago, the divider will go back in this weekend before he gets aggressive with her again.
Just a FYI males are play boys they do not pair for life but do there job and move on looking for another ready female. any female not ready is chased away, as there is no ware for your female to go he will hurrass the pee out of her.

Thanks pops, i have returned her to the 180 with her horn dog;), & there she will stay, guilt seems to have got the better of me. I have a modified milk crate with a big rock on it & only she can get in there, quite the comfy little pad actually so she will be fine. The only thing that concerns me is will she always be the garbage guts while he just has a nibble here & there, it's just that i want him to get as big as possible & i fear he won't if he spends all his time trying to impress her.

I never separated my jags and they always got along.

he be fine, if you have a place for her to get away from him, it should work better. keep in mind the male will start to digging big time. you can widge a piece of hose between the glass and the crate to hold in place.

I have wild caught so perhaps that makes a dif,

If he manages to move the crate i will be astonished, it is wedged in the opposite corner of the tank with a BIG rock on there but thanks for the advice. Will he still get to 16" or more with a floozy in his tank..

Should do, spawning can slow down growth but not stop it, at 13/14 inch it will take a few years though.
