I am currently having my first attempt at breeding fish and have what seems to be a pair of sajica. They hit it off from the moment I introduced the female and are currently occupying a cage in the corner of the tank. The problem is they are in a community tank with some various other fish that includes some loaches and a calvus, these fish are always in and out of their cave and getting chased away. Are they being interupted too much to actually do the deed?

I am also getting the impression the calvus knows whats coming as he has started lingering around their cave like a bad smell. Not the most ideal fish to have around when their is potential for fry!

Is it worth moving the pair to a separate tank so they can be alone? If so will a 4 inch and 2 inch sajica be okay in a 12gal for breeding purposes?

I think it would be best if you switch them alone. 12 Gallon for breeding purposes should be fine. Really, I would have a bigger tank just so they could have a bit more room. Also so you you don't have to worry about having the fry get eaten if you put them alone.

I personally would leave them for a few attempts. Male sajica can be brutal on their female, and a failed spawn which is not uncommon the first few attempts can really set this off. In my opinion the other fish could draw some of his aggression if this takes place. My male killed his female after three failed spawns
