I was wondering how affective separating the biggest aggressor in the tank works with central and south american cichlids (preferably a female jaguar) i have done this method with african lake cichlid and let them cool off 4 a few days and put them back and they calmed down dramatically but can this work with a young female jag if soo how long should it b seperated?

has any1 done this with these types?

My jaguar is pretty non-aggressive. I did have an issue with it and my blue gill fighting, but just re-arranging the decorations stopped that. When I had a convict I would separate it from the remaining fish for a week or so and that would usually cool things off until I changed up my fish again. The one thing I can recommend is to separate the aggressive fish, give some cool down time, then re-arrange right before you add the jag back. That worked for me when introducing new fish to throw things off and mix up the hierarchy. Good luck

ok thanx for the info.. i dont think i can give her a full week because all i had to separate her in was a large bucket where i have a air pump and heater running in it

My female jag has killed everything I put in her tank, But with my other tanks normally adding lots of coverage helps and rearranging once in a while reestablishes dominance.

I've actually thought about doing one of those breeder plastic separators where the smaller fish can go through and keep my jag out, just so I can give her some tankmates.

Yea thats crazy what types of fish did u have mine is kinda the smallest cichlid in the tank at the moment but u wouldnt think soo with he temper she has a selection of her tank mates she lets B and only challeneges a select few

True, I had mayan cichlids, a warmouth, and cichla. She harasses them all close or to death, although at times I've had her with certain fish for a few months until one day she'd snap.

I have a 5" Texas right now that was in need of a timeout. I put a tank separator in the 150G but that seemed to piss her off even more not being able to get at her 'enemies'. She is now in a 20 long cooling off for a week or so. We will see.

Surely you can afford a small tank - wait... How big is the fish? In any case, all fish are dif and if you don't try you won't know.
