Hi All,

Well I was not planning on needing to do this for a little while yet but I am looking at getting some adult marbled motoros.

I hear most of the breeders out here are seperating their males from their females when they mature.

Is this because the males are too rough on the females? Is this all males or just some? Is this to control who mates with who and when?

Any input would be great, want to know what I am potentially getting into before I actually for sure do it :)

Thanks!

I am not so great on the breeding area so when i tell you this make sure you double check it before you actually go for it. I think that as long as the male doesn't rough up with the female you don't need to separate. Not every male rough houses with the female so just keep a watch for a while. But remember not sure about this concept so ask someone with more experience.

Do you seperate after she is preg for the pup's safety or the females?

The tank is a 520 gallon (96" x 42" x 30" - L x W x H) so it is not huge by any means for a trio of adult marbles.

With my motoros the male would let off after they mated. With my leos its the opposite, they just keep trying to breed the females stressing them. I have a seperate tank for the males...

Imo this is the risk u hav to take if you are interested in breeding. Be prepared for the worst...

When seperated is it generally for most of the time or just a few weeks to give the female a break? Just trying to get an idea what would be involved if I did want to do the breeding thing.

In regards to Al's MM pair, when I had them they were never seperated and there was also a mature Leo male in the tank as well, she bred consistantly three times for me and only got chewed on up until the time she was knocked up,afterwards they pretty much left her alone.I believe having other rays in there with them also helps break up the aggression, though I'm sure not always the case.If the female does'nt want to breed, then she will deff get tore up!

I seperate for a couple reasons. Primary is to know who the fathers are (for genetic tracking reasons). Secondary is protecting the females and pups. I've seen males keep bothering preg females to the point that she will miscarry.

Yup my males just dont give up so they are always seperated now. Also seperating and reintroducing just makes it worse

Im sure i could try keeping them together but last time my leo gave birth a month early and the pups died
