cycle like a normal tank?
Everything about it should be the same except it's not a glass tank. The only problem you may run into is with larger plastic bins. They aren't made to hold something as heavy as water and may warp and split if they don't have proper support. Smaller ones, like under 15-20 gallons, should be fine

Bump: if I wanted to get something in the 50 gal range how would I support it? Get two and put the first one inside of the second? Ducktape the outside up? Both?

What kind of fish? I've seen some 55 gallon food grade drums on Craigslist here that would work, provided you're not rescuing big fish. No worries about bracing a drum:) Cheap too. Usually around 10 bucks or so.

The problem we had with trying to do something similar with plastic bins to grow plants is that they do crack in places due to the weight of the water
