Serial Dempsey

The Cave
During the day, my Jack Dempsey and Oscar swim side by side, but as soon as the lights go out, Jack turns into a territory freak. I know that they're extremely territorial, but they never fight when he lights are on. :screwy: Any suggestions?
 
Right now they're in a 55. Oscar's about 10". Jack's about 8". I know it's probably not enough room, but I'm working on getting a 225 up and running in the next few months.
 
I had the same problem. I have a 9" Oscar and a 8" Dempsey. They both get along great now. Before the Dempsey would terrorize the Oscar and a Royal Clown Knife (RIP). When the Knife died, he wasn't as bad towards the Oscar, but the Oscar is pretty passive. I added a Jaguar Cichlid, who's pretty aggressive and half his size. And now the Dempsey and Oscar are the best of friends. The Jaguar always picks a fight with the Dempsey but never the Oscar. But it's not that bad though. The Dempsey will usually run away. And they only fight if the Dempsey tries to get in the Jaguar's cave (pipe).
 
You might try rearranging some of your things in the tank around to break up territories or add something else in.
 
my dempsey killed everything i put into its tank up until last month.....i tried everything but he was just nuts he killed bala sharks, gouramis, neons, convicts, plecos, tinfoil barbs, tiger barbs....the list goes on.....but now he is fine i tossed in 2 bichirs and he never bothers them then i added in a gt and some corys and everyone gets along
 
its funny cause my dempsey never fought with my other two oscars. the oscars used to fight with each other once in a while but never did the Dempsey fought against the oscars, and I also trying to get bigger space for those three but it will be a miricle to get a 220 gallon for the price I m willing to settle.
 
I just moved my 225 into the living room of my 700 square foot apt. I have no living room now :o) Only 2-3 more months and my kids'll have a new, bigger home, and maybe less fighting! Dempsey's attacking Oscar right now actually. He's freakin' nutz!
 
I've seen it with my own eyes at JCashion's apt. Its really weird. Basically about two seconds after the lights go out its like Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde, the Jack just flips a switch and starts beating the piss out of the oscar!! Weirdest thing i've ever seen. Why would a fish change its personality as soon as the lights go out????? :WTF:

anyone got any ideas?
