Now I’m not saying the real fish rescues (you know who they are). I’m talking about the ones that pop up on local Craigslist and social media groups. It’s always I have a fish rescue I can take in any fish. With a little investigating you’ll see they have a bunch on small tanks, dirty water, terrible stocking. They either turn out to be the ones trying to make $ off free stuff or fish hoarders with poor practice. They always want donations to pp and free everything. Fish keeping is an expensive hobby if you can’t afford the things to offer proper care to the fish for its life don’t consider your self a Rescue because when you see how much the utility bills go up and then bail (see it all the time) it’s even worse. Am I the only one that feels this way?
I think it also causes more people to buy fish they can’t keep for life because they think when it’s to big I can just give it to a rescue. Even the biggest Rescue can’t support all the tank busters sold in the hobby.

To me this is what they are to the fish hobby 1364955

Seems like an oddly specific picture to compare them to. They are the bad-mustache-having italian panhandlers of the hobby? What is that supposed to mean? LMAO
Maybe it's because I don't join aquarium groups on facebook etc., but I've never seen or heard of a "fake big fish rescue" group. Only one I know about is Big Rich, and he's great IMO.

More so just a panhandler wanting non essential items handed to them.

P Pond9 , I have seen the C-list peeps who say they will take any free aquarium stuff and I do think that is fair game to use a free site to beg for stuff... but my rant is those who respond to my ad to sell an item for money and begin with the line about ‘ever considered donating’ to someone in need...

I see the same ad or two on cl all the time asking for free fish. Yet I have seen lots of free fish stay listed for weeks or months....so can’t say they aren’t picky. Lol

The only rescue in my area I know about I’ve actually met them. They bought some of my fish for a school project they were hosting to educate the kids on fish keeping. They decided to make a competition out of it and judge growth, color, and overall health. I thought it sounded pretty neat. They also loan aquariums and equipment. They come set it up and getting you seeded and ready for fish. Then you can buy the set up if you like it or give it back if it’s not your thing. They do maintenance as well.
So I can’t say all smalltime fish rescues are bad.
Some just might not have figured out a reasonable way to run their rescue.
And you will always have horders pretending to be a ligit rescue.
