On another forum here is what I posted after looking at some pictures that a Guy called Jungle2u posted.

Here was my post

Very good pictures! I expecially like the Arapaima Giggas as I keep monster fish too. Just not them.

Here is what the next person said

The A. Giggas are for food. (people food)

Are they serious?

The gigas was once used for nothing but human consumption, but with our hobby booming, it has become available to average aqariasts.

yea some guys do that stuff but i don't get why people keep fish especially excpencive fish just to eat them once they get big...there was a guy on here that was from SA and he was a big retailer and had a huge pond full of huge A. giggas and he ate some once in a while

At the beggining, as with all fish, they were cheap as hell. Then hobbyists started noticing them, and researching them, and the price has now skyrocketed. I remember the same thing happening with black aros. 4-5 years ago I bought a black aro for $15

It is all supply and demand. Sadly there is such a huge demand in our hobby for a fish that only 1-2% of hobbyists could supply a home for at adulthood.

I agree, except I would put the number at more like 1/10th of a percent or lower.

I wanted to, but then I thought to myself, hey this is MFK!:headbang2

BTW, Jungle2u is run by John/Apistogramma Master. But yes he farms pima's for food. As kinda covered... Many monster fish from catfish and catfish hybrid's to pacu's and others are farmed for food purposes.
