Serranochromis info needed

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I first read about Nembwe in an old TFH Atlas. It's a large predatory Haplochromine, but I am sure you knew that.

I have been looking for one for years. If you find any, please let me know.

I can't afford to go to Africa for one. lol

Description
One of the best known largemouth species in Southern Africa with a more robust body than most other species.
Colour
Dorsal surface to head and body of adult males is light to dark olive green paling over the flanks to an off-white/yellow ventral surface. The older fish tend to be darker in overall body and fin colouration. Dorsal fin approximates body colour but has a yellow margin and brown to red spots are present on the posterior portion of the soft rays. Caudial fin blue to green.
Size
Fish of up to 6 kg have been reported caught, however a fish of over 2 kg is considered a good catch.
Distribution
Upper Zambezi and the occasional specimens in Lake Kariba. Okavango and Chobe River.
Abundance
Common throughout the Upper Zambezi.
Angling
Without doubt one of the most exciting sporting species amongst the cichlids. They can be caught in every conceivable river environment, over sandy bottom in the middle of the river, near the marginal vegetation close to the banks, in and below the rapids and in very deep water. Spinners, spoons, spinner baits, live bait and worms are all effective. Fly fishing is also very effective at the right times and in the right places.

i have the book, there is only one decent pic in it, i know there not importedt usually, but i have seen them for sale before, either on aquabid, or on a list sometimes they get brought in by acident, they r breed as food in there native land so they shouldn't be that hard to get .

I've owned one specimen, was mixed in with an import of african odds and ends. LFS didn't know what it was, so I snagged it as some sort of cheap tilapia. Was more/less the african equivalent of a peacock bass, quite a passive but greedy fish. Died in a power outage though =(
