I have a question for all you 1500-50000 gallon monster tank owners on what kind of filtration/heating setups do u ppl use on them? Also expense cost on running these beasts? I'm asking because I will be building a monster one myself within the next year or 2. I'm building one in my basement when I move back home next year or so and my parents inherited their second house for me to live in. To my knowledge it has a full size basement but I haven't been there in many years so I don't know exact measurements of it. I either keep it or sell it and find a new home with a large basement for my fish room. I'm hoping to build a minimum size of 12' x 6' x 4' but the bigger the better. Anyways I've been using the search module and couldn't really find any info on this. If anyone out there with these monster setups could give some advice help is much appreciated. I'm pretty much just planning for now as my Amazonia monsters will eventually outgrow my 450g and I want to get some ideas on these types of setups.

Anyone?

I know usually large sumps is the way to go but I'm trying to decide if I want the humidity and noise issue and I know there will be lots due to the size it needs. I read somewhere that pool filters work well?

We're in the process of building our fishroom to house our new tank. I really like spiff's setup, and his two Ultima 4000 filters for redundancy.

We're going with mega filtration on our 1800 gallon tank, utilizing two Ultima 4000 filters for biological filtration run with ReeFlo Barracuda pumps. For mechanical filtration, we will be using four large spa filters connected to two Hammerhead pumps. Because there are two 4' external overflow boxes, one of the Ultimas will be drawing from the 336 gallon sump and returning the water to the main tank. (We were only able to get eleven holes (for 1.5" bulkheads) drilled in the top of the tank for uptake and return lines) One of the Ultimas will also have a 120 Watt UV sterilizer connected to its return line (haven't decided on the UV sterilizer yet). There will be seven uptake lines from the tank (not including the two overflow boxes), and four return lines. I'm still deciding whether to go with an inline heater, or submersible heater. We will be running a Clarity CL-3 protein skimmer off the sump utilizing a ReeFlo Tarpon pump.

Since the fishroom is being built, we will have drains/water lines for purging of the Ultimas and adding and removing water.

Triangular area will house the filtration room. Area under the 2,500 pound acrylic tank is reinforced. Foundation to be poured Thursday. (80% rain forecast for Tue/Wed). It's going to be a really tight fit in the filtration room. Hope I measured and planned it out right.

I chose not to go with a wet/dry trickle filter because of the frequent power outages in our area....oh yeah, I forgot that we're installing a generator that will turn on when the power goes out.....but right now, I sometimes have to get up at 1 or 2 am to add water to the tank to get the biomedia submersed in our wet/dry system..when the power goes out. With the Ultimas, the media is submerged when the power goes out. Either way, it shouldn't be a problem with a generator. I realize that the Ultimas would handle the mechanical filtration, but I like the spa filters so much, I'm not willing to give them up. We will have four poop suckers (1.5" pvc) coming down 1/4" off the floor to pick up debris off the floor. I always have the option of throwing biological media into the sump, but really don't think I need to...we'll only be housing our two pacu and have no plans to add other fish.

Since you're an FX-5 man, check out the Ultima 6000 and Ultima 10000. Actually, even one Ultima 4000 is overkill for a 2000 gallon tank.

Wow pacu_mom that looks and sounds crazy. I'm pretty much a noob when it comes down to sumps and wet/dry DIY filtration setups. Myself I only know plug and play:( Looks pretty complicated to me but I'm slowly learning:) Also I would probabely have to upgrade my drywall to mold resistant dry wall since there will be alot of humidity. Thanks for the info on those Ultima filters. I'll look up on those more and GL on your project.

Read spiff's thread. He went from a wet/dry to the Ultimas. He also uses two 1500 Watt titanium heaters. He did an 1800 - 2000 gallon basement build and would probably be a good resource person for you for information.

A custom built fish room, 1800g tank, and all those filters just for two pacu!?!?!?

You have to be one of the most dedicated pacu enthusiasts I think I've ever heard of...

I know. I guess that's why her name is pacu mom and kudos to u:headbang2Much envy:) She'll probabely add some tankmates once they realize there's alot of room in that tank for just 2 Pacus. I thought I was crazy upgrading to a 450 just for 5 fish at first but once I had the room I ended up adding more stock. Now I need more room and now I know how others feel when your monsters need the space to grow and live properly.

On my 4300 gallon build, http://www.tadege.com/wakinfilter.htm is what I'm basing my filters off of. I'll be running 4 Hammerhead Gold pumps on the filters and the Quiet One 4000s I have for circulation and polishing. I'm also working on adapting a waste water treatment denitrification filter for aquarium use. Heating will be done with a modified hydronic radiant system similar to what TheFishGuy used. I also have an 8 ft. or so coast to coast surface skimmer. Bulkheads, screens, and flexible pvc are from Flexpvc.com and the Uniseal fittings for the filters are from Aquaticeco.com.

Thanks for the advice. The koi pond reminds me of a good old buddy of mine who owns a koi farm in Colwood, Victoria BC who can give me some personal advice cuz I'm moving back to Vancouver BC. He's also the maker of Sea Star fish tanks and he also built a 20000 gallon koi pond inside his house. Didn't think of asking him til I saw the kois. Thanks again:D

We drilled the holes wrong in two of the 55 gallon drums (fortunately, I get them for free), but they'll be used when I build my 5000 gallon outdoor pond this summer. My friend is bringing more barrels for me this weekend to our aquarium society meeting at my house.
