I am setting up my 75G to house one male Midas.

Will I be ok with 2 Aquaclear 500/110's with the standard foam and Biomax? I've been thinking about going with this setup for the next 6 months then transitioning to a Eheim canister and just run that and ditch the AQ's.

I think two 110's will be more than sufficient, that should be plenty

I think it would work well. i would just trade turns cleaning the filters. Sounds like overkill.....but i like overkill!

Yes, I like overkill too.

Will I be fine if I decide to just stick with the AQ's and not get an Eheim?
Also, I have black sand as substrate in this tank...does that have any impact on filtration?

You should be just fine with AC only
As long as the sand doesnt get kicked into the impellers you'll be ok.

I was wondering what would not be considered overkill..and would still be effective? poor college students can't afford overkill for their 75g's :D

Well Aerobean9, in this situation one of those 110 aquaclear filters would be effective especially considering that there is only one fish in the tank, however, I feel that you can never have too much filtration and I like to use more than one filter on tanks that are over 3 feet long, but that's just me....
I'm a college student too and I feel your pain, these things can really add up, but you can do it...

2 AC 500/110s is a lil overkill for a 75 IMO I have 2 of them on my 120 an a fluval 403 for xtra Bio. but Ive always said "you can filter the water to much"
