Well originally I was going to go with a 40 gallon that my mom was using for her turtle(who had outgrown the tank) but instead my Dad ended up giving me his 55 gallon with stand and all other equipment included! Once the water is all set I plan on moving just my blue gourami and gold gourami into it. Right now they are in a 20 gallon and that's obviously not going to be big enough for them for life. What can I put in with my gouramis? I would really love to get some kind of spiny eel(love the Fire eels!) but I'm not sure if they would do well with my set up. I've got a sand substrate and plan on planting the tank fairly well. I will be trying to create a moss wall on the back wall of the tank once I get the supplies. I'll also be looking into better lighting as it's lit with florescent lights right now. Here is a picture of it from tonight.

Once it's planted mabye you could get a zig zag spiny eel or mabye a peacock spiny eel. Also blue and gold gouramis should stay small enough for a twenty. If you don't put the gouramis in you could get a fire eel once it is planted.

55 gallon already , I told you...
You will have monster tanks (plural) before you know it.

All kidding aside, the 55 will open up a lot more choices of fish for you, congrats on the new set up!

Tropicalfish34-Why can't I have a fire eel in with the gouramis? Will the gouramis pick on him or will he pick on them?

DMD123-Ya 55 already lol. I told my hubby to watch out once we buy our own house lol I'm already looking at bigger tanks and planning what kind of set up I'll have lol.

Anyone with any more suggestions? I'll have to post new pics of the tank since I've added a couple plants and a piece of driftwood.

Did you want your Gouramis as your centerpiece fishes? If so you could some cories to add some movement towards the bottom and deep body tetras. I personally enjoy dwarf cichlids, especially Apsitogrammas, but Im not sure if youd want to a cichlid to the mix...You def. have more options now with the 55g than the 20g.

You can also get some thing like a bichir. A Senegal bichir (sometimes sold as a dinosaur eel,/available at Petsmart) would work out well esp. since you have a sand substrate. Some would say no since this fish can technically get 18-20", but most Ive seen max out around a foot. A group of Congo tetras and an African Butterfly fish would make a nice little set up.

Ok so I think I'll go with a peacock eel instead of a fire eel so my gouramis wont get eaten lol. Can I add any other gouramis or will they fight? The two I have now are pretty peaceful. I'd also like to get a school of danios going too. How many could I put in my 55 gallon? Would a pleco be a bad idea?
