Hi, I'm getting a new tank and I am going to use a eheim 2026 which is used and a new 2217, I was told by a breeder if I use a filter that has stuff from a filter that was used the tank should be good to go,
my question is this, the used filter wasnt used for a few weeks it is dry, is it the same thing can I just hook it up?
and my next question is if I put the brand new filter on my 55 gallon Malawi tank for a few hours is it as good? but I dont want it to ruin the 55 gallon, everything is fine with that one.
and should both filters have used media ore if I just do it with the new one and hook the used one up dry to the new tanks is allso ok?

Thank, I hope its not to confusing,
Jack

Once it's dry the bacteria dies, especially after a few weeks. The new filter will take at least 2 - 4 weeks to get a good colony of bacteria going. You could take some of the media out of your existing filter and add it to the new one. You are still going to need to watch your water for a while.

Ok, here is where I'm right now,
I got the 125 Gallon new tank on Friday wow is it big , Ups was supoosed to bring my new eheim 2217 on Friday and the driver messed up, he wrote on the package atempted delivery it wasnt true because we where all home at the time he posted that, So I will need to wait until Monday. I allso ordered 2 300 watt heaters.

I am running my used Eheim 2026 on my malawi tank since friday,
My question is this Should I set up my new tank with the used filter and add the new filter and heaters when ups brings it. or I should set up the whole thing and then add the water?

I got alot of rock have some drift would and 2 fake plants.

if the has only been running since friday you aren't ready for fish yet. If you have other filter media that's been going for more than a month put it in the new filter, or look up fishless cycle here on the boards and you can see what you need to do.
