Hi all,
I am setting up a new 55 gal tank and as far as I can tell I have done everythign right. I have let it stand with the filter running for a few days and the ph amonia etc test have been done and all seems to be fine.

I would like to start cycling but the water appears much cloudier than when I have first started. I had rinsed everything as instructed.

Is this a normal occurance?

yes it is. my tank did the same thing when i bought a new filter for my tank. it stayed cloudy for several days and then all of a sudden it cleared up. i just let the water and the new filter run its course and it was just miraculously crystal clear one day. just be patient =]

What filter are you running? Whats the stock? fish or no fish cycle?

Congrats on the new tank.

I would search "cycling a new tank" and read as much info as you can handle (assuming you havent already)

Ammonia won't spike until there is a source for it so the cloudyness could be from lost of things. I had issues with gravel on one of my tanks. Maybe some residual dust?

top fin power filter 60, no fish added yet. Didn't want to start until conditions were perfect. Not sure if the cloudiness means it is unsafe.
You also will prob need to add more filtration on a 55 also especially if its a monster.

I have had the same thing happen to me now. My tank is cloudy and is leaving a white residue just above the water line. I'm not sure if it was still around when i did it but i think there was some Tetracycline still in the water that i took from an est tank. Is that a bad thing???? will it kill of my bio

Completely normal. YOu will probably want to add more filtration before you add fish, but the cloudiness is normal, and will not hurt most fish.
