Would I be able to set a 20h on a 180gal with some wood running from front to back on top for support?

Would the 180gal be able to hold the 20gal on top or would the glass break?

I think it would be fine. People do overhead sumps all the time although the wood wouldn't hurt

That is what I was thinking. It would be filled with plants and such for the return line of my sump to flow into. Just didn't know about wieght

Overhead sumps are usually supported on their own shelves or are placed on pre-designed FG tanks built to support the filter's weight. NOT on top of a glass tank. A full 20, with media and organisms, will weigh about 200 pounds. Run a refugium as an adjunct to an under-tank W/D system (with added lighting under the stand) or construct a proper wall-mounted shelf for the refugium.

I ran an overhead sump several years ago. This setup has been long torn down.

I made a frame out of angle irons supported by 2x 24" threaded 1/2" steel pipe on mounting flanges.

My original design had the sump on top of the tank. That didn't work so hot
