I used a 120 grit, but I also had a frame around mine.

I have been watching your tank build thread since you started it. I am staying behind you in the steps to see if you find any "gotchas" that I can use for my tank.

You may be right. The tank I am doing right now- what we plan to do is mix the epoxy and dilute it a little with acetone. This will thin it out just enough so it will soak into the wood like a thin varnish. After cure we will add another coat at normal mix. This coat will cure out and will be the base for the silicone to set on for the float glass.

However, what some guys have done is coat some scrap acrylic with a release agent and press that into the wet epoxy on the section where the glass will sit. When the epoxy cures they remove the acrylic and you have a flat surface for the silicone to bond in. Silicone loves a flat unadulterated surface to bond on. It's a lot of extra work but I hear it works excellent.
