Ive been in the hobby for 8 months or so now and Ive decided I'd like to try my hand at some actual breeding. I buit a 2x4 stand and set it up for originally 3 40 breeders but now Im thinking Ill do 2 40B and 3x10g on the top rack. Either way had a few questions before I start ordering things for the tanks.
I will be breeding cichlids I believe my first 40gB I will be doing rainbow cichlids as I already have a male and female and Ive heard they are pretty easy. The second will most likely be my green severums just reaching breeding age not fully grown.
so here is a list of questions.
1.A I will be using sponge fliters will an air pump say whisper 100 with two outlets beable to handle both 40 B or are sponge filters similar to hobs you want double your filtration ie. 1 whisper 100 and two sponges for each 40gB. I have very limited exp. with just sponge filtration.
1.B would using say an ac 70 on each and then 1 whisper 100 connected to 2 sponges 1 in each ok. Or as they are breeder tanks I should stick with sponges only?
2. I was planing on leaving bare bottom but now Im thinking I want to do a very thin layer of gravel just for looks. Opinions?
3. Lighting. Necessary to have dedicated aquarium lights for each tank? Other viable cheaper options for breeder tanks?
4. Was just going to fill with a ton of terra cotta pots pvc pipe and have fake plants floating on the top. Anything else useful I should pick up?
5. Necessary to have back grounds or painted sides. Ie. all three sides painted black or covered in something. I perfer the look of them open but will do whatever I can to make the fish more comfortable, for more successful breeding.
6. Any heaters recommended for 40 b reliable and on the cost effective side?
7. When should I remove the fry from their parents? I know that the parents often eat the fry will moving the fry to a 10g as soon as they hatch discourage the parents from breeding again?
Also side question I always use whisper air pumps is there another brand I should take a look at?
The rack is made with 2x4 then primed and painted with black semi gloss. the demisions are almost exact to fit a 40g B each shelf 37x20x30 The height is for extra room to work on the tanks.
Thanks Ill post pictures when its set up right now theres just a 20g h and a 10 g on the rack so its kind sad.
Thanks!
