I’m about to setup a 125g to grow out a group of eight 3.5" Midas that I am getting from Jeff Rapps. I’d like your thoughts on filtration and substrate.

Filtration

Here is my proposed setup:

2 - Hydro 5 sponge filters driven by air pumps (primary bio filtration)
1 - AquaTop CF-500 (primary mechanical filtration)
2 – powerheads to keep detritus suspended

I have no doubt the above will be more than enough bio filtration. My concern is mechanical. I want to ensure the water is clear. I’m wondering if I would be better off with a smaller canister and a HOB or two smaller canisters.

Substrate

I want black gravel. However, all the black gravel that I have tried seems to lose its color over time. I could go with TMS, but not sure I want to spend that much. Is there a brand of gravel that does not lose its color?

I also thought about going with pool filter sand and adding small black river rock to the top of the sand. My concern with sand is detritus sitting on top.

I thought about an AC110. But, contrary to popular opinion, I'm not a big fan of them for mechanical filtration. I think they are great for bio, but no so great for mechanical.

I have 2 fluval 405s on my 125 and got tired of opening them every week to change polishing pads so I added an ac 110 and use a lot of filter floss/pillow stuffing for polishing and couldn't be happier with water clarity and ease of maintenance.
