Im about to setup a 125g to grow out a group of eight 3.5" Midas that I am getting from Jeff Rapps. Id like your thoughts on filtration and substrate.
Filtration
Here is my proposed setup:
2 - Hydro 5 sponge filters driven by air pumps (primary bio filtration)
1 - AquaTop CF-500 (primary mechanical filtration)
2 powerheads to keep detritus suspended
I have no doubt the above will be more than enough bio filtration. My concern is mechanical. I want to ensure the water is clear. Im wondering if I would be better off with a smaller canister and a HOB or two smaller canisters.
Substrate
I want black gravel. However, all the black gravel that I have tried seems to lose its color over time. I could go with TMS, but not sure I want to spend that much. Is there a brand of gravel that does not lose its color?
I also thought about going with pool filter sand and adding small black river rock to the top of the sand. My concern with sand is detritus sitting on top.
