Hi guys,

I have been looking for a big tank for quite a while now. Looks like I will be getting a 150G (6'X18"X28"). I plan on using a 55G tank as the sump. I have never designed a sump before, but have read quite a bit on it. I will probably need some help in any NYC MFKers want to lend a hand. I have a few questions before I begin.

First off, tank is not drilled. Should I buy an overflow box or make a DIY one? Also, if you look at the next question you will see that I want a 10X flow rate. Does this mean I should have an overflow that can handle 1500GPH or more? If more, how much more?

If I'm looking to get 10X flow rate, should I use a return pump rated for 1500GPH or more? The sump will be directly underneath, so I know the pump will loose a little power on the incline.

In my sump I plan on making a moving bed filter or a deep sand bed (maybe both). Anyone have any experience with both types of filtration?

My primary goal is to have a SAFE (I live on a second floor apartment) and effective filtration system. Secondly, to have nitrates as low as possible and only have to do a nice 50% WC once a week. No evil 30% changes every 2 days!

As always, your input is greatly appreciated.

I just bought a 1200 gph over flow, did not set it up yet. The drilling way is cheaper, but i suck with...well basically i know I'm going to mess my tank up if I drill. its for 120g tank. so you have to decide on that.

I plan on not using a pump, I have a few hagen filters laying around, i'm going to use them to send the water back. You would need a pump that does more than 1500gph return.

dont know

the overflow box is more expensive method while drilling will save you money. both methods are safe and fully efficient.
