Hi there been wondering about how I should set up my bare bottom 80 gal. I currently have 2 SD's and a banded tiger botia loach in it. I've been told I should add some smaller cichlids into it and was wondering what kind of cichlids I should get. I mainly want something I haven't tried before that would be nice and beautiful while also being Hardy. Where I live, all I can get is hard water, the PH is usually around 8.7-9, which tends to limit me on choices. I would like something that I could possibly breed. I've had convicts and African jewels in the past and would definitely like something different. If anybody has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

A group of 5-6 Firemouth Cichlids.

It's unlikely unless a pair is protecting fry. Firemouth ime are mild aggressive more bluff than bite.
Well that's good to know. I know when I had convicts, they were just unholy terrors. Had the male lip lock with the bigger SD and he really regretted it afterwards. Had a miss-shappened lip for a few weeks. Would firemouths do fine with salvini or do you think they would just fight it out all the time? I hear salvini tend to be really aggressive.

The Salvini will be too aggressive for the Firemouth. The Firemouth would be easily killed.

Yeah that's what I kinda thought. Any cichlids that would get along well with firemouths? Or would mixing just be a bad idea? I've had mixed results in the past.

Tbh I can't think of any other Cichlid tankmates. Hopefully other members will chime in with their opinions.
