Hello
what would you say is the best filter to use as mechanical filtration/polish and purigen only?

i was thinking maybe eheim 2262 but that is out of my price range

i was thinking fluval fx5 but i worry about cavitation and micro bubbles and clogging if i run a ton of low micron pads and up to 2L of purigen

any suggestions?

i was thinking, something like stacking

mech, small amount of bio rings, several polishing pads, and then up to 1-2L of purigen

i think my only option is a eheim 2262 at this point, lol

It has been my experience that canisters are pretty lousy water polishers. My Eheim 2075 is a nice filter but it has never done much for water clarity. A magnum 350 seems to be the goto water polisher but I can't say I was very impressed with mine. Maybe my standards for clear water are just to high?

A DE filter is the only filter I have ever used that does what I consider to be water polishing. I started with a Diatom D1 filter and was so impressed I wanted a DE filter that ran FULL TIME! So I got a swimming pool filter... probably over kill for most but I HAVE CLEAR WATER!!!!

If you want clear water but can't justify a swimming pool filter I highly recommend a Diatom XL filter.

Purigen works great , I use it but it is kind of expensive if you are worried about cost, water polishing pads work great too but they dont last very long. I have heard of people using felt as a water polisher, it might be cheaper in the longrun but they probably clog even faster than polishing pads.

No offense to Oughtsix, but do you just leave your filters hanging out like that? i think it wold drive me nuts...

In my experience, purigen works wonders for polishing water, even in a canister... i've put in probably about half a liter to maybe a liter max of purigen in one of my canisters before for my 200G tank, and within 48 hours the water was absolutely spotless...

Best thing is you can re-charge your purigen, so although its expensive to start with, if you keep up with recharging it and not let it turn completely dark you should be able to get a lot of use out of it...
