Ok, i have a 100g Juwel tank and want too put discus in it.
I have some questions.

Ok in the tank will be the following sp. of fish:

Discus
SAE
Cardinal Tetras
Swordtails (only few)

So, how many of each should i get, im gonna start with only 2 discus and few Cardinals but how many of those fish should i have when the tank is fully stocked?

I have a Juwel Rio 400L filter (1000 liters p/h) and Rena Xp3 (1350 liters p/h) So there is 2350L/621G p/h. Is that enaugh?

If not, how many L/G should i have per hour?

As you see i am new too discus, i dont know what species of discus i should get, should i have only 1 kind or 2 of each, or 2+ of each?

Here are the sp. of discus on the Website i order from:

German Blue Discus 3"
German Blue Discus 4"
Golden Pigeon Discus 3"
Heckel Discus 4-5"
Leopard Discus 3"
Ocean Green Discus 3"
Pigeon Blood Discus 2.5"
Pigeon Blood Discus 3"
Pigeon Blood Discus 4"
Red And White Discus 3"
Red And White Discus 4"
Red Malborough Discus 2.5"
Red Malborough Discus 4"
Red Turquoise Discus 2.5"
Red Turquoise Discus 3"
Red Turquoise Discus 4"
Red Wave Pigeon Blood Discus 4"
Snakeskin Discus 3"
Snow White Discus 3"

What should i get as 2 starting Discus?

Thanks for the answers, when they arrive.

it should be depend on what you like, most of the species are really nice looking (well, for me).. you should get a min. of 4 discus with that tank..

and i hope, you did a lot of research when keeping discus.. please, don't get me wrong..

for me, a minimum of 4-6 discus will be fine.. because discus is a shoaling fish, they like to be in a group..

Ive never had discus but they all looks nice i no my LFS uses tetra black water extract it puts a darker tint to your water and is suppose to promote fish activity discus seem to love it.

Start with 4 minimum. 3 and lower is absolutely worst. Chances are good that the bully will constantly harass another one to starvation. It doesn't matter what strains you get. All mentioned are still one species. If you wish to start with juveniles (below 4 inches), then keep a group in a barebottom tank. Feed them several times a day and do daily water changes. Regular feedings and water changes can help prevent stunting which is quite a frequent occurrence with juveniles especially as their water is not replaced regularly.

(imo) You want to add the discus in last, after running the rest of the stock for some time. The tank should be well developped, fully cycled and matured for a couple months. Buy larger cardinals if you have choice in size, or hope they grow well.

Watch the SAE they can be boisterous, especially towards timid discus.

Personally I think the most stunning discus tanks contain a group of all one colour, but each to their own. I think you will have best luck starting off with more than 4. A group this small may still be able to focus aggression on one individual. Ideally 6 would be in the initial to curb their dominance. More discus near the same size can be added later on. I would keep 8 in that tank.

Discus are actually extremely aggressive fish. But almost only intraspecific, to their own kind. In a small group one discus, not always the largest, but commonly, will become dominant. It will single out the runt, and it will be picked on till it withers away and dies. Next runt in line, the same fate. Until the dominant is the only that remains. By keeping them in larger groups, the aggression is better spread and absorbed by many individuals in the group. focussed on one individual it is lethal. Spread out over the group it is normal healthy behavior.

You asked about sufficient filtration. You want to look at your turnover rate. Add up your filters lph, and divide it by the size of the tank (400L). At a very minimum you should be about 3 times. discus like fresh water. Frequent small waterchanges will go a long way. 20% every three days works well, but that will cary tank to tank. Feed a varied diet, live and frozen is prefered, a few times a day.
