I'm thinking about setting up a spare 10 gallon that I have as a breeding tank for feeders. I have always kept CA/SA cichlids and I like watching them hunt down their food on occasion. But I want to avoid feeding them the store bought rosie's and goldfish and try breeding something in my spare 10 gallon for them.

Can someone give me some tips/suggestions on how to set this up? And what type of fish is best for this?

My original plan was to use some heavy ground foliage and go with 2 pairs of Mollies.

Has anyone done this before?

I started breeding guppies for my Arowana. This was stupid because
the aro quickly grew too big for guppies. I could have fed him the entire tank!
Now I use the tank to hold the goldfish that I feed him.

For a 10g mollies would work but don't expect alot of them, it would be more productive to use the tank as a quarantine/treatment tank for purchased feeders.

yeah, i'm getting ready to set up a feeder tank with convicts, they breed like rabbits. as long as you don't have a problem feeding cichlids to cichlids.

Do you breed the Cons in the 10G? Or just move the fry to it?
I don't use feeders often...maybe like once every 2 weeks. So would Mollies be able to provide an adequate amount of fry?
I'm getting kind of turned off to this idea. Might go with Guppy's suggestion of just using it as a quarantine tank for store bought feeders.

Also, does anyone gut load their feeders? What do you give them prior to feeding them to your monsters?

just think of it this way every month a mollie will have 30 average babies and it takes about 6 months to grow them to a good size so think of how much space it will take to raise how many babies you need

I tried breeding convicts as feeders. You would need lots and lots of tanks to get any large number of feeders. I gave up, too much hassle, much easier just to get couple bucks worth from the store anyways.
