I've decided to dive into the world of marine tanks with my 45 gallon. I decided on a FOWLR since I don't really think I have the money for reef lighting or the experience to deal with corals. The only problem is that I don't really know the best way to set one up.
So far these are the things I know I'll need:
Live Rock (I was planning on purchasing 45lb..?)
I have an HOB filter rated for 90 gallon aquariums that filters 400gph... will this be enough for the mechanical and chemical filtration? Some people recommend wet/dry filters but I've been told they're unnecessary because of the Live Rock and end up just becoming nitrate factories.
and then 2 power heads
then potentially a protein skimmer unless I don't need one (I've heard 2 different things)
Other than that I don't know what else I'll really need other than the obvious stuff like a heater, hydrometer/refractometer and a testing kit.
I plan on keeping this community:
3x Green Chromis
1x Yellow Watchman Goby (with 1 tiger pistol shrimp)
1x Royal Gramma
I just really have no idea how to set up a protein skimmer or anything really. I have some experience keeping brackish and freshwater fish but I am completely new to marine. Any advice you guys could give me would be great.
