Hello fishkeepers, this is my first proper post after introducing myself so here goes....

I want to keep a couple of oscars & some larger species of catfish. Now what I would like to know is can I get them as juveniles and keep them in my 55gal until they outgrow the tank? What kind of time scale would we be talking?

Is this is not really an option, I know eventually I would need a tank around the 150gal mark so can anyone recommend a good quality tank and cabinet of around that size?

Also if I was to get a tank that size would it be safe to have on a second floor?I live the uk in a 5 year old flat/apartment on the second floor.

Thanks alot guys, I await your response.

Leeboy.

well, you definitely start with juvi oscars in a 55. but if you wanna mix the oscars with cats then pick your catfish wisely. RTC, TSN and RTC X TSN are really fast growing and will get too large even for a 150 after only a year. you can consider jurunese, tigrinus and other relatively smaller cats to start with. good luck. make sure you give adequate filteration.

I see no problem in keeping them, for now, in the 55.

As to the second issue, it depends. I would say that if your flats was built to european standards you would have no problem. Put it next to a "principal wall" where the ( I do not rememeber the correct term in english ) reinforced concrete is apt to bear more weight.

Hello leeboy... It seems you and I are in a similiar situation... I'm looking to put together a tank with a marble oscar, some jds and a pleco... I'm planning on upgrading to a bigger tank in a year but for now a simple 55...

Thanks for the replys guys. So how long do you think I would have before I need to upgrade if I brought all juveniles? Yeah agree on the cats I do t really want anything that grows any larger than the oscars but obviously a fair bit bigger than corydoras! Regarding filtration I'm currently running a fluval 305 but was gonna up grade to the fluval fx5. Do you think that would be powerfully enough?

Thanks alot.

they'll be cool in the 55 for a while, but for monster catfish, your 150G upgrade still might be small enough.

Thanks peewee. Yeah I'm not gonna go with the gigantic species of catfish, just some that won't grow bigger than the oscars. I'm a big fan of panaques. Wanted to keep one for a while so there will definatly be one of those in there. Not sure what type yet, haven't decided. Sorry to be a pain but u say a while are we talking months or years. I probably won't be able to upgrade for 18 months, so would need the 55 to last that long. Is that feazable? Thanks.

so i'm sorry to change the subject but can someone tell me how to start a new thread and such thanx

I kept juvenile o's in a 55. I had two of them, and If I remember correctly, I started feeling bad about tank size after about 6-8 months. They grow fast. I moved them into a 135 after that.

Really? That quick? I thought they took 2 to 3 years to get to full size. If that's the case I think I'll haft to leave the oscars for a while. What else could I keep that would be good feature fish that would be happier in a 55 and don't grow as fast? Any suggestions? I've done community fish for ages and really want a Monster setup but needs to be slow growing monsters.

Cheers for advice.
