setting up a new external filter

iam going to be setting up my fluval fx5 on friday.....

what do you think squeeze all the crap from my other external into the new fx5 and put some of the hexagonal things from exsisting filter and then leave my exsisting filter working and also the fx5 at the other end of tank.....
when do you recommend removing the exsisting filter<its going to be going to my sister for her terripin tank.....so need to keep it live.....

I would just hook both up on the same tank and let them run for awhile... watch your params while the fish are in the tank with both running and after 2 weeks or so pull the old one off and hand it to your sister

I have both my FX5 and my old 405 running at the same time just put some of the prefilter (Hex's) into the new one and run both at the same time.
