Setting up a new SW tank, help?

So I decided to go with a FOWLR tank, I decided to get sand but not live sand and use live rock. I have to get a power was and a protein skimmer. Can anyone kinda wall me through the process of setting everything up? I've done FW for years and years but SW is new to me I just don't wanna get everything set up and then bam it's all dead, know what I mean

I thoroughly enjoyed keeping saltwater fish, but I am by no means an expert. I gave it up due to the fact that it was, though not necessarily more work, more expensive overall, and all the door knobs in the room i had the saltwater tank in started to rust. :) I was living at home at the time and my mother was not pleased. I miss it at times, but i'm not sure i'll go back due to the expense, and potential loss if something goes wrong with overall husbandry of the fish and tank.

The only unqualified advice I can give, get the biggest protein skimmer you can afford.
