hey mfk im setting up a new tank and i have some really cool looking rocks i want to put in for decoration and im not sure if the will affect the water or fish. can anyone help???? i will post pictures to help identify these rocks asap. does anyone know of any unsafe rocks or rock i shouldn't put in my fish tank...please help thanks mfkers

Here's a good article about the suitability of rocks.

http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/rock_metals.php

The first sentence of the article says, "Most rocks that you find in your yard, in creeks or streams, or elsewhere in nature pose no problems for use in the aquarium." which is true...so if you found them in your yard, in a creek, in a stream, in a river, or in a lake they'll pose little to no problems. I would just give them a good rinse and maybe boil them to be on the safe side. :)

This. Boil them.

yes boiling would kill anything that hitched a ride.i would add that if you see any signs of rust on the rock,it would be no good, metals will leech in the tank
