The wife wants to set up a 125 gal South&Central American Cichlid tank. Any suggestions? She bought a juvie jack demsey and fire mouth to start. The tank is up and running. Whats to try and avoid any tank thugs, ya right ,good luck on that one, lol. Anything she gets will be small to start, Thanks in advance for any help.

if you don't get any bruisers like red devils or jags your options are still pretty open. keep the jack dempsey as the "big fish" and work around him. maybe a female salvini? you could probably add a school of some kind considering you're working with a 125.

Looking at going with the same tank size for my current crew. Male JD, FM, hopefully female Tex, and will most likely add another cichlid. Avoid the super aggressive like Red Devils and Jags, etc. with your current 2. For my cleanup I use a Pictus (getting another soon),Rubber Lip Pleco, and Striped raphael catfish. All fish are different so be willing to try out some stuff.

Some possible Cichlids: Salvini, Texas, Convict, Oscar (maybe), Green Terror. If you aim for decent size fish rather than the biggest possible you can have more, as long as you don't add too many

Neither JD or firemouth are S American, they are (depending on how far you consider Geography), either North American (both come from Mexico), or Central American.
Some consider Alaska south thru Panama, North America, and South America beginning in Columbia. I live in Panama, and that's how I see it.
There are a host of other tankmates that would fit, just nothing too aggressive.
The Archocentrus/Crytoheros group, many of the Astatheros, if your trying to be geographically correct. a few examples
Astatheros rostratum

Astatheros robersoni

Cryptoheros sajica

Crytoheros nicaraguense

Theraps lentiginosus

Thanks for the feedback , I was thinking maybe green or red terror? Convicts? etc. I don't have much experience with new world cichlids. I am presently looking for a 240 gal. for my Africans , so I gave her my 125 gal to do what ever she wants to.

Out of those 2 I'd do the GT. That RT could be pretty nasty when mature

I wouldn't add a green terror or red terror you might ruin your tank chemistry they are evil. Just be aware Jack Dempsey are slowwwwww growers at least in my experience they are... But anyways this would be a good stock list in my opinion!
Jack Dempsey
Fire mouth
Female salvinI
6 silver dollara
5 pictus catfish
2 Bristle nose plecos

Great feedback and thanks again. What ever we get will have to be ordered thru a supplier , we are in the Bermuda Triangle of fish keeping:eek: Like my 240 gal. acrylic I'm getting will have to be shipped up here when I find a manufacturer to go with.

I kinda like that stock. I'm going similar I think. 2 or 3 pictus. BA Tetras as dithers, and add a Tex to that mix minus the SDs
